Lijiang old town in Yunnan , is the only Chinese city selected in the UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list. Having a historical background of 1,300 years, it is popularly referred to as the Old Town of Lijiang, a great hub to the ancient Dongba culture and a major tourist attraction in China. Heavily populated by people of Naxi nationality, Lijiang is the county seat of the Naxi Autonomous County. It is located on a plateau at an elevation of 2,600m and offers impressive beauty due to its awesome scenic beauty and lush vegetation.

The ancient Lijiang town was founded at the foot of the Yulong Snow Mountain and was named "Dayan Zheng"(the Town of Big Ink Slab) because the town is boarded by mountains from every side, with crystal clear water running through the town. The town covers an area of 3.8 square km at an elevation of 2,400 meters. Lijiang is quite rich in flora and fauna with over 20 forests, over 800 species of aesculapian plants, almost 3000 species of seed plant and more than 20 species of animals. The Lijiang Old Town in Yunnan is famous for its well oriented system of waterways and bridges. It has been called too by the common people as the "Venice of the East".
