Lantau Island

Located right on the edge of Pearl River, Lantau Island is the largest island in Hong Kong administrative region. Lantau Island is apart of the Island District of Hong hong but a small part in the North East of the island falls inside the territory of Tsuen Wan district. Though located on the site of several fishing villages, Lantau Island has gone through major transformation in the recent times with the development of major infrastructural projects like an airport and Hong Kong Disneyland.

Lantau Island is surrounded by several undulating mountainous terrains and offers great scenic beauty to people and as a result it is also one of the major tourist destinations in Hong Kong region. With an altitude of 934 meters from the bed of Pearl River, Lantau peak is the greatest tourist attraction of Lantau Island not only for its natural beauty but for several archaeological remains. The other major tourist attractions of Lantau Island are the Wisdom Path near Po Lin Monastery on Ngong Plateau. Large number gather on Ngong Plateau to watch the huge Tian Tan Buddha. Apart from the 85 feet high statue of Lord Buddha the other attractions of Ngong Plateau are the other monastery buildings and vegetarian restaurant. Located in the North West of Lantau Island , Tai O is also a popular and interesting tourists spot. Tai O is a three centuries old fishing town that attracts tourists for its historical settings, waterways, stilt houses and fishing boats. Tai O is also very famous for delicious traditional Chinese delicacies like salted fish and shrimp paste.

Tung Chunfg Fort, one of the oldest forts in the region is also situated in Lantau Island . Built in th year 1817, for stopping the illegal opium trading and to protect the island from the attack of pirates, Tung Chung Fort is surely on e of the most important historical monuments in Hong Kong. The ruins of Tung Chung Battery is the greatest attraction of Tung Chung Fort. Situated in the North East of Lantau Island , Hong Kong Disneyland is its newest tourist attraction and a major crowd puller. The other major tourist destination of Lantau Island are the Trappist haven Monastery, Discovery Bay and several national parks.
