Located in th Western part of Lantau Island on Nnong Ping Plateau, Po Lin Monastery is also known as the Buddhist Kingdom in the South' and 'The Big Hut' for the huge statue of Lord Buddha. Po Lin Monastery was built on Nnong Ping Plateau in th year 1920 by three Buddhist monks and was dedicated to Lord Buddha. The name Po Lin as given four years later and from that time large number of monks started settling there. In the year 1930, the area of Po Lin Monastery was expanded and several large halls and temples were built within the compound and ate present Po Lin is one of the top 10 Buddhist monasteries not only in Lantau island but also in entire Hong Kong.
Inside Po Lin Monastery you would find three large bronze statues of Lord Buddha that represent three his past, present and future lives. The Big Buddha is situated in the extended part of Po Lin Monastery and was inaugurated in the year 1993. The 340 meters tall and 250 tonne bronze statue of Buddha is the largest in the world and is one of the greatest creations in entire China. Since the statue was inaugurated, Po Lin Monastery & the Big Buddha became one of the most popular religious places for Buddhists. Po Lin Monastery & the Big Buddha remain crowded throughout the year with large number of Buddhist people and international tourists. But the religious and architectural importance is not the only attraction of Po Lin Monastery & the Big Buddha . Delicious vegetarian Chinese foods that are served to people in the monastery is also a major attraction.
