One of the two special administrative regions of China is Hong Kong along with Macau. Comprising of 260 islands the territory is located on the esatern side of the Pearl river delta. Hong Kong was a crown colony of the United Kingdom from 1842 until the british nationality act was passed in 1981. Hong Kong primarily consists of Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories as well as some 260 other islands.

Human settlement in this area which is now known as Hong Kong dates back to the Paleolithic era. The region was first a part of imperial China in the Qin dynasty and served as a trading post and naval base during the Tang dynasty and the Song dynasty. In 1839, the refusal of Qing dynasty authorities to import opiun resulted in the first opium war between China and Britain. Hong Kong was first occupied by British forces in 1841. The country has a subtropical climate and for nearly half of the year it tend to be temperate. The region is cloudy in January and February, meeting with the occasional cold fronts. The country is most likely to be affected by tropical cyclones from July to September although they are not unusual any time.
Hong Kong has a total collection of 262 islands in the south China sea, of which Lantau is the largest. Hong Kong is the second largest island and is most populated. The literal meaning of "Hong Kong" is "fragrant harbour" and is derived from the area around present-day Aberdeen on Hong Kong island. This is an area where fragrant wood products and fragrant incense were once traded.
